Feminism, Food and Family “In My Neighborhood: Poetry and Prose from an Italian American” captures the author's admiration and respect for the cultural dissonance faced by her Italian immigrant ancestors. However, her ethnic perspective is deepened by her own particular quest. That quest is the journey to accept being a woman-loving woman, while she faces the sexism and homophobia within her family and in society at large.Capone begins in the warmth of her New York neighborhood in which. Denise M. said Compelling, Thoughtful and Fun Read. I read this book, on Kindle, straight through, it is so compelling. I looked forward to each new step in the author's journey. Her honesty, energy, and compassion and appreciation for her family was striking, and I really want to note her unusually cogent understanding of the social context in which she and her family's lives play out. The descriptions of family meals and family outings were vivid and fun. I am hoping the author is working on a sequel, or a play or screenp. humorous and heartfelt The author has a cheeky sense of humor while telling the story of her life. I love the anecdotes and especially the way she uses poetry as a biography. Lovely book.

From beginning to end, through poetry, essay, and memoir, she explores her journey both emotionally and geographically, as she leaves the hub of her ethnic identity in New York, and enters the world beyond her childhood. In My Neighborhood is a lyrical, humorous, and provocative book documenting Giovanna Capone’s search for a political and personal identity as an Italian-American raised in an old world traditional family, who later claims herself as a lesbian and a political activist. Her writing is bound by a search for love, freedom, and ethnic identity, and also by her feminist politics and point of view. Her beloved heritage is an ever-present touchstone as she examines her roots and describes her adult life and developing consciousness.
