--Dr. --Rachel Adelman, Jerusalem Post . By the author's own admission, the biography of the first prominent woman Bible scholar was problematic from the outset: How can one write about someone who adamantly shunned the limelight? Prof. I hear lectures on the weekly portion all over Israel, and think of Nehama. Gabriel H. Leibowitz (known to all, at her own behest, as Nehama) was exceedingly modest and covetous over her privacy to the point of hanging up the phone when asked for an interview. The book also examines her pioneering approach to the study of the Hebrew Bible and the commentaries that forever changed the face of Jewish Bible study, as well as her acceptance as a prominent Torah scholar despite her gender and the future of her work in light of recent scholarship. Shalom Freedman said A wonderful book about a truly remarkable and great teacher of Torah. Nehama Leibowitz was one of the great pioneering Torah teachers of her generation. She reached thousands of people throughout the Jewish world, and influenced many who were to become themselves outstanding teachers. Hanoch the Gardener said Comfort My People. This is a tremendous book which well answers the question, "Who was Nechama Leibowitz?" As someone who studied Judaic Studies in college, I found the section about Nechama's relation to the Bible Critics very informative and eye-opening. Also, as an American law school drop-out who moved to Israel and currently works as a gardener, I took succor from a comment Dr. Nechama made to one of her students, who went to do graduate study in the Diaspora, saying, "Are these intellectual things so important? Why don't you come back here and pick tomatoes?" She
