The book reveals how Hoover helped create McCarthyism, blackmailed the Kennedy brothers, and influenced the Supreme Court; how he retarded the civil rights movement and forged connections with mobsters; and what part he played in the investigations of President John F. Roosevelt to Richard Nixon. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. "The cumulative effect is overwhelming. He kept extensive blackmail files and used illegal wiretaps and hidden microphones to destroy anyone who opposed him. 32 pages of photographs. Eleanor Roosevelt was right: Hoover’s FBI was an American gestapo."Newsweek Shocking, grim, frightening, Curt Gentry’s masterful portrait of America’s top policeman is a unique political biography. "Rich in Detail, Broad in Scope, An Amazing Piece of Work" according to Festivus. This is one of the most detailed, well-written, scholarly biographies that I have ever read. You really get a feel for Hoover's professional life and his role in American government. Frankly, each chapter of this book is an amazing accomplishment, exposing Hoover for what he was, and more importantly, what he wanted us to believe he was. The only fault that I can find with the book is that, once we get to the 1960s, the author's own political biases begin to color the narrative, but as long as you are aware of it, it doesn't detract from the quality of the b. "Much more detailed information" according to Lolly Hellman. This book was much better. It is far more detailed and really got down to the nitty gritty about what Hoover did and his efforts at making the FBI better, but also untouchable by anyone else. The FBI is like a country unto themselves, and if you don't believe that, you weren't born in the good old U.S.A. Even cops are intimidated by the FBI and hate it when they step into their investigations. Yes, the FBI is great and has done an excellent job, but sometimes they stick their nose where it doesn't belong.. "OMG" according to Kindle Customer. With the movie out about Hoovers life I had to read this book. OMG what a secretive operator Hoover was. This is a very eye opening book on the way our government operated.
