In March of 1987, David Crow journeyed to this land of stark contrasts, leaving behind his successful acupuncture and herb clinic in San Francisco in search of medical teachings from the Tibetan Buddhist and Ayurvedic traditions. Chopel and other teachers, including the first woman Ayurvedic MD in Nepal, and the King's alchemist, who showed Crow how to transform mercury--a dangerous poison in its natural state--into a potent medicine used by generations of Ayurvedic physicians. A colorful and captivating story of adventure, exploration, and self-discovery, In Search of the Medicine Buddha transports re

Lib. Syst., Seattle Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. Crow, a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, examines such topics as herbal remedies, alchemy, women's roles in Ayurvedic medicine and in Buddhist culture, massage, meditation, and the use of mercury as a highly effective but very dangerous healing agent. The author also does not clearly explain the relationship between Ayurvedic and Tibetan medicine and does not provide a systematic examination of either healing tradition. . Beautifully written, inspiring, but almost completely lacking in practical instruction A poetic book, but disjointed. One moment he is writing about his experience in Nepal and in the next paragraph, without warning, about being in the California desert. Very few dates are given and it hard to follow the flow of events. Lots of stream of consciousness passages on the philosophy of healing and the interconnectedness of man and nature. The book would have been much better if he had quoted more from his teachers and contained his poetic ramblings to half their length.I have to give it only three stars as it is almost totally devoid of any practical advice.
