DESCRIPTION:

Heralded as the "best book on the dope decade" by the New York Times Book Review, Hunter S. Thompson's documented drug orgy through Las Vegas would no doubt leave Nancy Reagan blushing and D.A.R.E. Gonzo, in a souped-up convertible dubbed the "Great Red Shark." In its trunk, they stow "two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers. On assignment from a sports magazine to cover "the fabulous Mint 400"--a free-for-all biker's race in the heart of the Nevada desert--the drug-a-delic duo stumbles through Vegas in hallucinatory hopes of finding the American dream (two truck-stop waitresses tell them it's nearby, but can't remember if it's on the right or the left). "Gritty, intense writing" according to Sela. Intense, original, shocking - no one colors a scene like Hunter S. Thompson. However, this may not be the best choice for a reader who seeks a logical pattern of interwoven themes or writing infused with solid purpose. Thompson meanders, loses focus, drops thoughts which he may or may not pick up later. He and his lawyer, while brilliant, are not "likable". This is not a pretty or a tidy book.. A true classic Amazon Customer Why are you reading reviews for this book? Surely you've at least heard of it, as its masterful telling of a tale of a drug-addled quest for the American Dream (in Las Vegas, of all places) is branded into the very fabric of our culture. This is an absolute must-read for anybody.. Shrenik P. Shah said I read this entire book in four hours. This book is amazing, but I won't rehash the praise it has already received. To find out why 60's counter-culture failed, and how a grotesque incarnation of Americana was reinstituted in the 70's, look no further than Fear and Loathing. Thompson's twisted observations on life in Las Vegas in the early 70's provide some of the most brilliant insight on the absurdity of what could be construed as Horatio Alger's vision
