“A call to action.” —Boston Globe

On a warm and golden afternoon, October 4, 1960, a Lockheed Electra jet turboprop carrying 72 souls took off from Logan Airport. Largely because of the quick action and good seamanship of Winthrop citizens, many of them boys in small boats, ten passengers survived what the Civil Aeronautics Board termed “a non-survivable crash.” Using firsthand interviews with survivors of the crash, rescuers, divers, aeronautics experts, and ornithologists, as well as a wide range of primary source material, Kalafatas foregrounds the story of the crash and its aftermath to anchor a broader inquiry into developments in the aeronautics industry, the increase in the number of big birds in the skies of North America, and the increasing danger of “bird strikes.” Along the way he looks into interesting historical sidelights such as the creation of Logan Airport, the transformation of Boston’s industrial base to new technologies, and the nature of journalistic investigations in the early 1960s. Sue said Airport Neighbor. Congratuations to Michael Kalafatas on his well written, extensively researched, and thoughtful account of the Electra Crash. As a resident of Winthrop and a member of the Cottage Park Yacht Club, I feel that Michael caught the soul of CPYC, WInthrop, it's people and the community. I have to admit that nonfiction is not my favorite read. However this book held my attention and peaked curiosity. It got away from the usual didactic, sterile nonfiction presentation with antidotal accounts and by showing humor and soul.I. Fascinating and insightful Author Michael Kalafatas takes the reader deep into this story, seamlessly weaving facts and figures with personal information about the passengers on the Electra flight and those who came to their rescue. The reader knows from the start that the flight is doomed, yet the author's level of detail keeps the suspense high and leaves us hoping that the ending will be different. But even after the inevitable occurs, Mr. Kalafatas isn't content with simply explaining what happened; he guides us to understand how it happen. Bird Strike, The Crash of the Boston Electra. Book is well written and provides a good historical look at the accident. The author was sometimes, it seemed somewhat poetic, but kept my interest all along. He uses academically large words throughout the entire book, however I did not mind the learning experience.Overall a very enjoyable read.
