DESCRIPTION:
"This book brought back great memories of family, friends, and food. It made me laugh and made me hungry!" --Joe Rogers, Jr., chairman and CEO, Waffle House, Inc.
His wife suspects the invitation comes from Lexi, Sam's not-quite childhood sweetheart who ran wild with him and his brothers in the wide open backyards of their 1950s neighborhood. Sam McLeod was always a "big boned" guy with a passion for good cooking. But when a friend of his suffers a sudden heart attack, Sam realizes that it's time to make some changes in his life. Believing that he'll find the purpose he needs along the way, Sam's wife bundles him off on the cross-country trip to Nashville. Ending his journey in the old neighborhood, Sam surveys his childhood home and comes to understand that his memories, and the food that carried the love of the women who cooked it, are all he needs to know the meaning of life.. But what Sam finds as he drives are memories of his childhood: of the creek with the mythic snake and the secret hideout cave; of the judge who made him think he was going to jail for throwing a snowball; and the gentle old man who gave the neighborhood kids candy. As he contemplates severing his relationship with food, Sam receives an invitation to a neighborhood reunion in Nashville, Tennessee.
A charming, fun read. Each chapter of this easy summer read reminded me of friends, family and the joy and simplicity of childhood. That combined with laughing out loud humor made this a new favorite!. L. F. Knight said Finished the book and I'm full of laughter. My wife and I stole this book from the others nightstand for the chance to read it. We both laughed our way through the entire book. McLeod's gift is that his prose reads as if he were a raconteur telling you his tale. The narrative is bound together by food with great souvenirs of onions, Wonder bread, pickled shrimp, strawberry pie and plenty of milk. The other strong links are of family and frien. A Carr said Magical. With Big Appetite, Sam McLeod captures something fundamentally true about life. The book is magical that way. The setting and characters are accurate, vivid, hysterical and real-- while simultaneously seeming to have emerged from a fairy tale. Once you pick it up you will be swept away into the Hollow and you won't want to leave. It's an easy, entertaining read that anyone will enjoy.
