I'm an American history buff and I bought a copy of this book after reading the author's "Gunsmoke and Saddle Leather" which had thoroughly satisfied my curiosity about firearms used in the 19th century west of the Mississippi. In this new book, Mr. Worman provided a general survey of firearms development and use not just in the west but from coast to coast from colonization in the early 1600s to the end of the 19th century, guns in the hands of civilians, the military, and Native Americans. In the process, he corrected some misconceptions I'd had about f. "An Excellent Historical Primer for All Americans" according to J A Ventolo. This is a book which those people with a general interest in antique firearms have needed for decades. If your interest is concentrated on a particular field such as Winchesters or Civil War guns or muzzle loading target rifles, you can find excellent books devoted to such specific topics. But in this volume the author presents a general overview of three centuries of firearms history in this country and it's obvious he knows what he's talking about. It's well illustrated, obviously carefully researched, and written in a style that's uncomplicated when he
